How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description
Tailoring means making relevant evidence easier to find. Keep the facts the same; change which details you emphasize and how clearly you explain them.
Start with the actual posting
Copy the role description and requirements, including the work the person will do. Separate essential qualifications from preferences. Check the employer’s original posting when possible: copied listings can leave out context. Choose one role per version so your resume has a clear focus.
Match each requirement to evidence
Make two columns: what the employer asks for and where you have done related work. Include paid work, projects and volunteering. If you have no evidence for a requirement, leave it as a gap rather than inserting the term into your skills list.

More specific
If accurate: Collected weekly updates from support and operations, resolved missing information and prepared the shared status report.
Edit the summary and strongest bullets
Use the summary to connect your existing background to the target work. Put your most relevant contributions first within a role. Name tools you actually used, and describe your contribution with an action and context. Add outcomes or numbers only when you can support them. You do not need a metric in every bullet.
Use AI as a draft, then check it

Use the reviewed bullet and letter tools for additional drafting. Check every tool name, qualification, date and outcome against your original experience before accepting. Keyword overlap is a prompt to review relevance, not an ATS score.
Save a version and review the export
Download a project file named for the role so you can return to it. Read the exported PDF or text from beginning to end. Confirm contact details, page breaks and the requested submission format. Remove sample content and placeholders before applying.
